The Painted Swagman

A Tribute to Waltzing Matilda

  • A 'labour of love,'  this book took seven years in its research and making. The final painting in the book - Australian Spirit - is an endeavour to sum up the artist's love for the land, its people, its past and its future. The dedication says it all:

'This book is dedicated, in gratitude and admiration, to our early pioneers of all origins and our modern pioneers who continue to Advance Australia.'

  • The narrative running through the book is extracted from an early draft of the artist's first historical novel, later published as Conlan's Luck. All the paintings in  the illustrated book show characters and events from the fateful  journey of The Swagman. A map is included so you can track his travels.

Original softcover Novel of 560 pages  $14.95 AUD  inc. historical notes and the Song

The Brewers' Picnic
From his vantage point on the apron of the bandstand, the Swagman surveys the pleasant scene, wishing his small family could be there to share in it.

All the fun of a fair spread across the grassy grounds of Picnic Point with its panoramic view of the eastern Downs, dominated by the squared-off mesa called Table Top Mountain. There were concerts in the bandstand, pony rides for children, minstrel shows featuring black performers who had come out from America with Charles Hick's original travelling shows, displays by the local dancing school, and endless free beer.
